Sudbury 3rd Annual Dance Festival 2008

Nickel City Cloggers
Group A - Group B 

The “Nickel City Cloggers” is made up of about twenty members.  Weekly practice sessions are held at the Parkside Centre in downtown Sudbury and at the Royal Canadian Legion in Minnow Lake.  Members have from one to five or more years of dancing experience. During the year, the group performs at various locations throughout the region including, retirement and nursing homes, friendship centers, in schools and for special events such as Sudbury’s Celtic Festival and the 125th  anniversary celebrations.  They have also performed at workshops in both Sudbury and SS Marie and at the OIDA, annual dance festival held at the Fraser Auditorium. Company G Performers
Group A - Group B - Group C (Solo)

The Company G Performers are a group of 31 dancers ranging from 7 to 21 years of age. The group participates in various Performances, Competitions, and Dance Workshops throughout the year and have performed on various ships for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. The performers support many charities in our area such as the Canadian Cancer Treatment Center, the P.L.A.Y. Program. Company G Performers won Gold Medal and Sudbury Mayors Challenge trophy at the Sudbury 1st Annual Dance Festival 2006. Company G Performers won  Silver, Bronze Medals and Tsunami Rx OIDA Challenge trophies on 2007 Festival. Company G performers' new studio located at 1188 St. Jerome street, Sudbury. 

Earth Dancers
Group A - Group B

Earthdancers is a Sudbury-based group of young dancers whose dream is to make a difference in this world. Every year they produce an inspiring performance of modern dance and donate all the proceeds to benefit the environment. Over the sixteen years of their existence, the group has contributed over $53,000 dollars to Friends of the Earth, Trans Canada Trail, the World Wildlife Fund and Sudbury Vegetation Enhancement Technical Advisory Committee (VETAC). Over the past few years, earthdancers have been acknowledged as contributors to the Jane Goodall Walking Trail in Coniston, performed in the Tsunami Rx Benefit Concert held November 2005, and have participated in the TD Canada Trust Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, cleaning a 2 km section of Junction Creek

Super Stack Swing Dance
Group A 

Cheryl Wormsbecker and Nicolas Robidoux learned the Lindy Hop, Charleston, East Coast Swing, Balboa, Triple Swing, Shag and Blues Dance in Vancouver and Montreal. These dances from the Golden Age of Jazz saw a worldwide revival in the 90s and are danced in most Canadian college towns to music ranging from classic jazz and blues to country rock, reggae, chanson and hip hop.  Cheryl teaches swing dancing in Sudbury and Espanola. She moved to Sudbury from Vancouver in 2004, and is currently studying Nursing at Laurentian University. Nicolas came to Sudbury in 2003 to teach Mathematics at Laurentian University. Sampo RGC - Aesthetics Group Gymnastics Team
Group A

The Sampo Rhythmic Gymnastics Club grew out of the Sampo Athletics Club, a Finnish based club established in 1951. In the early 1960's, the popularity of Rhythmic Gymnastics began to grow under the direction of Maija Ceming due to the club opening its doors to the general public. Now a new branch of rhythmic gymnastics called Aesthetic Group Gymnastics is soaring to new heights and Sampo RGC has a large competitive program with girls aged 6-18 years competing in four different interclub levels. The competitive gymnasts participate in many local performances including MCTV Christmas Telethon, Santa Claus Parade, Finlandia Village, Blues for Food and many bridal showers. Sampo's competitive gymnasts have also represented Canada at many provincial, national and international events, including some in Germany, Sweden, Finland, Portugal and Austria. Stewart Doran - Singer


Stewart Doran is a  happily  married father of twin 17 year old boys. Approximately 4 years ago he began singing with the Irish Heritage Singers and a year later began to sing his own at Seniors Homes and church events. Since then he branched off into anniversary, birthday, and family parties. His selection of music could be termed "Crooner" with Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra being his favourite selections. He sings for people for the pure enjoyment of interacting with people and have met many very nice people along the way.  


Afro Caribbean Group
Group A - Group B

It is a Toronto based group of girls ranging from 15-22 years of age. The group participates in various performances across North America during events related to African and Caribbean culture such as CARIBANA, BLACK HISTORY MONTH, WEDDINGS, FUNERALS. The group receives several trophies (Caribana 2008 in Toronto), medals (Black History month event in Toronto, Boston and Montreal). The group expresses social patterns and values of Afro Caribbean; depending on the situation, they praise or criticize members of the community through dances while celebrating. A sub set of this group currently settled in Sudbury for school purposes will perform two varieties of dances (one African another Caribbean) to demonstrate Afro Caribbean culture and behaviour to the Greater Sudbury community.

Group B

Chantal MacDonald, Chantal Racette, Marie-Chantal Nolet, and Cheryl Wormsbecker are the Flappers Four. They share a passion for swing dancing and love to recreate the energy and dance of the 1920s Flapper era.

Group A Chicky  - Group B - Harem

Murielle Jacques began her studies in the art of Raq Sharki at the age of 50 under the guidance of Lucie de Lafontaine at Baladi Narional Baladi.  Seven years later, she now teaches and dances professionally.  Murielle is devoted to the art of dance, and loves to learn new dance styles by attending various workshops, and studying DVD’s.  Her passion is dancing Cabaret Fusion (which combines movements of Raq Sharki, Turkish, Morocco, Greece, and other dance styles), as well as ATS (certification in American Tribal Style with Carolena Nericcia).  Murielle performed at numerous venues both in and out of the Sudbury area, and will continue to perform for as long as she is able to do so.

Ladies' Performance Group
Sampo Rhythmatic Gymnastics Club

Sampo Rhythmatic Gymnastic Club has been a part of the Sudbury community for more than forty years. Since 2003, the ladies have performed at a variety of events in Sudbury community, including special occasions at Finlandia Rest Home, "I Love Gymnastics week" Gymnaestrada and spring Spirit recital. In 2004, the ladies competetd at Red Ribbon in Ottawa. In 2006, gymnasts performed at the Canadian Gymnaestrada in Ottawa. They also attended the International Gymnaestrada in Dornbirn, Austria in July 2007. Most recently, the ladies performed at the Finnish Grand Festival in Toronto. 

Laurentian University Pipe Band and Dancers
Group A - Group B

The Laurentian University Pipe Band and the official university tartan were formally launched by former Laurentian President Dr. Judith Woodsworth during  spring convocation on Tuesday, May 29, 2007 .   With 12 active pipers and drummers, the band is comprised of students, faculty and community members who are interested in promoting their Scottish heritage and serving as musical ambassadors for Laurentian University. In September 2007, the pipe band added highland dancers to the ensemble which definately compliment the band in concert settings.   Currently, our dancers are students at the university or associated with staff and faculty.    The dancers are under the direction of 2nd year concurrent education student Kimberleigh Barclay who  is a qualified teacher with the British Association of Teachers of Dancing. She has been dancing competitively since the age of 3, and at age 9  she placed second at the Cowal Highland Gathering in Scotland.  Croatian Kolo and Tamburitza Group
Group A

The Croatian Kolo and Tamburitza group was founded in 1969 and will be celebrating it’s 40th anniversary in 2009.  Since then, their dedication to their Croatian heritage has warmed the hearts of Croatians and Canadians alike.  The group’s membership is comprised of singers and dancers ranging from ages 5 to 18years of age.  The Kolo group also has a musical combo and singers which accompany the children for many of their performances.  This folklore ensemble has successfully dedicated itself to the preservation of the Croatian culture through music, song and dance.  That success has been seen in their performances and trips throughout Canada , the US and Croatia .  Through the dedicated work of their members, supporters and teacher the group has managed to continue there success all of these years. 

Sudbury Irish Arts Association
Group A - Group B

The Sudbury Irish Arts Association (SIAA) is one of over 600 branches of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann worldwide. Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann can be loosely translated as "Association of Irish Musicians" and it is Ireland's premiere cultural group. The aims of Comhaltas is to promote the Irish traditions of dance, music and song. In doing so, Irish language, literature, art and folk traditions just naturally become a part of a person's exploration of Ireland's rich cultural traditions. The organization is non-political and non-religious in nature, seeking to help you get in touch with the Irish within you or just to learn more about Ireland's cultural traditions.
SIAA has organized weekly classes in Irish dancing, singing and language for children and adults alike. During March, SIAA hosts the Irish Celtic Fair (5 hrs. of non-stop live entertainment). The Spirit of World Drum Circle 

Jeff Stewart is a dedicated educator who facilitates drum circles in Sudbury community and at several music festivals, such as the Northern Lights Festival and Summerfest. He has also facilitated drum circles and clinics for the Rainbow Public School Board Music Task Force, Laurentian Hospital Rehab Center and at the Ontario Music Educators Association Conferences. Currently Jeff is facilitating “The Spirit of World Drumming Circles”, share the Spirit & Health of Drumming, key note speaker to promote the greatness of community through drumming for music educators and drumming enthusiasts of all ages. “The Spirit of World Drumming, Drum Circle Fun for All Ages” is a thirteen year project that will help to discover inner-sense of rhythm and life.
